Crewe (Sandler) is a former football star thrown out of the league for fixing a game. He gets into a fight with his girlfriend, steals her Bentley and crashes it in a high speed chase. Crewe is then sent to prison where the warden (Cromwell) wants Crewe to form some convicts into a football team to play an exhibition game against his guards.

Crewe enlists help from fellow inmate the Caretaker (Rock). At first only a ragtag few show up for the try outs but Crewe goes throughout the prison looking for the meanest and fastest guys he can find and promises each that they get to beat up the guards on the field. Soon he has an excellent and mean team with a chance of winning.

The guards and the warden aren't looking for a fair game; they want to humiliate the convicts. The warden urges another convict to kill one of Crewe's teammates. Then the warden tells Crewe that if he doesn't throw the game he will pin a murder on him.
