A writer struggling with alcoholism plans to go away to the country for the weekend with his brother and girlfriend, only finding an excuse to stay behind in the city. He steals his brother's money to buy two bottles of rye and binges the entire weekend. He begins to have hallucinations and winds up in the alcoholic wing of the city hospital. His girlfriend encourages him to continue his writing career to give his life meanining, and inspires him to fight his disease.
