Mel Gibson stars in and directs this tale of a disfigured man who lives life as a recluse. He is a school teacher who killed a child in a traffic accident. The resulting fire left him hideouly scarred in the face. One day he happens to meet a student, Chuck (Stahl) who desperately needs a tutor in order to attend a military academy. The bond that forms between them is enlightening and fascinating in this heartwarming coming of age story.
