In this Finnish comedy laced with social criticism, a laborer arrives in the Big City from the hinterlands and is promptly beaten to a pulp and robbed. The victim -- known throughout the movie only as "M" -- awakens in a hospital but cannot recall his past. With no money, ID, or anyone he can turn to, M ends up on the waterfront, in an enclave of homeless people. The rest of the film depicts the way M tries to become a productive member of society -- by finding meaningful employment, putting together a makeshift home, bonding with his fellow homeless companions, and falling in love.
