The Matrix Revolutions Movie Review Summary

Actors: Keanu Reeves

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Matrix Revolutions

The Matrix: Revolutions picks up right where The Matrix: Reloaded left off, so everyone is trying to figure out what happened to Neo (Keanu Reeves) and how to save him. But when Neo finally gets out of the Matrix, he comes back changed and he has discovered some disturbing information that will force him to make some difficult decisions. Neo finds that he can't even confide in Trinity (Carrie-Ann Moss) and that, although he is still The One, he doesn't quite believe that he can make a difference anymore. After spending a lot of time alone, Neo comes to the conclusion that he must go up to the surface and fight the machines on the old battleground, not just through the matrix. His other teammates try and dissuade him, but with Trinity by his side, Neo heads for the surface. Little does he know that Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) has a few surprises in store for him along the way...

Meanwhile, the rest of the crew heads back to Zion, all too aware that the fate of humankind may rest on their shoulders. For while they are trying to avoid the machines on their way home, the machines are attacking Zion and are programmed to destroy every living thing that remains. The inhabitants of Zion are not about to let their city go without a fight, however, and they use all of their old machinery and ammunition to try and keep the machines at bay. The Council will do just about anything to buy Neo more time, because in these last desperate hours all they have is hope...

I thought that this movie was wonderful in some ways and a disappointment in others. First off, I have to admit that I hated the ending. I can't quite figure out if the directors were trying to leave the Matrix open for future sequels or if they just wanted to stay all mystical and let people draw their own conclusions. I disagree with others, however, in that they say that the directors never answered any of their questions - the directors never made any plans to answer questions and from the outset it was obvious that the Matrix was always going to be a kind of shadowland that kept its own secrets. Most of the special effects were still amazing, but I expected this and almost expected them to be even better because this was the third and final movie in the trilogy and it should have just knocked my socks off. If anyone else had done the special effects, I probably would have been a lot more impressed, but the directors raised the bar so high with the first film that they were their own worst enemies. I was also a bit disappointed that they relied so heavily on CGI instead of on stunt work because that was what made all of the fight scenes so cool. This movie was also quite a bit drabber than the others because there was hardly any time spent in the Matrix and I have to admit that I missed all of the sweet outfits they used to wear there.

On the positive side, there were some great scenes in Zion as individuals fought hard to withstand the machines and one of my favorite characters was the Kid (Clayton Watson) who liked Neo and turned out to be a hero. The sets were still incredibly imaginative and there were some fun one-liners as well, so there are some good parts to the movie.

Revolutions drops the audience off right where Reloaded left off. Neo has passed through the door and finds himself in a new program which is essentially an area between the Matrix and the real world of Zion that resembles a sterile New York City Subway. While Neo finds his way back to Zion, Trinity and Morpheus along with the rest of the last human city dwellers have to figure out how to best use their waning resources in an effort to defend their city.

The effect of all this coupled with the build-up of the previous two movies is that the entire plot of Revolutions feels like an attempt to tie up loose ends as neatly as possible in a two-hour time frame while utilizing special effects. The Wachowskis bring in an unneeded and inane question of love that keeps coming up in an attempt to point out that Trinity and Neo have some sort of unworldly, impossible feeling for each other that drives them to live.

Another disappointing aspect of Revolutions is the use, or in this case, misuse of the supporting actors and characters. Once a powerful character who pushed the plot forward in intriguing directions, Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), simply spouts on and on about his undying belief in Neo (Keanu Reeves) as The One and has become a sidekick to Niobe (Jada Pinkett Smith). Trinity (Carrie Anne Moss) sports her now famous bird-like kick, but again is simply a supporting role to Neo's greatness. Even Niobe who doesn't believe in Neo eventually gives in and offers him her ship in a last, mysterious attempt to save Zion. Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) emerges as the only interesting character besides Neo, and ranks in my book alongside Darth Vader as one of the greatest villains ever conceived.

This is the third and last movie of the Matrix Trilogy. We see here the machines fighting against humans to destroy Zion, and Neo is now on his own with Trinity, trying to save Zion from destruction.

This is the third and worst film in the Matrix trilogy. Most of the movie doesn't even take place in the Matrix. We see the machines attacking the underground city and the battle to repel them. We see Jaded Pinkett Smith driving a hovercar in sewers. We see Neo talking to a bunch of people at a train station, and at the end he fights one of the Agent Smiths. Things are resolved, but nothing is explained.
