Actors: Jet Li, Carla Gugino, Delroy Lindo, Jason Statham

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The One

Instead of one universe there are several parallel universes. In each one there is a duplicate of a person from another. One man finds a way to travel through each universe and he kills 123 versions of himself. He now needs to kill one more to become The One. A cop is the last man and he soon discovers that he is being hunted, so he gathers up all his strength and intelligence to save himself.

There are countless universes, each with an Earth that is somewhat different from the others. Each universe has someone that looks like you. Yu Law has decided that he wants to be the only him in all the universes, because he has discovered that the death of one of his doubles increases his power, his strength and speed. He has almost finished killing everyone he needs to kill, and only Gabriel, a cop, is left. Others are trying to stop him before he kills Gabriel, not only because his actions are illegal, but because, if he becomes the last one, he could destroy all the universes.

This is for fans of Terminator, The Matrix, Enter The Dragon, TimeCop, and Star Trek. If you don't like pastiche you can ignore the joke quotes from other films as they are brief, sly, and ironic. The plot idea is that our universe is not the only one, and in each universe there is another one of you and me. You get around via wormholes in space, and the hard landing gives you the headache of a lifetime. (The other worlds theme is as old as the hills - as Peter says to the professor in 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe': "But do you mean, sir...that there could be other worlds - all over the place, just round the corner - like that?" "Nothing is more probable", says the prof, who is well versed in the classics.)

Jet Li is a rogue cop, a Just Do It type of guy, hitching from universe to universe, who rubs out his double in each place. Los Angeles in our universe is last on the list. Every time he does in one of his doubles he gets stronger, faster, and in more dire need of an anger management course. When he eliminates his last double he will, by definition, be the Only One, which, rather worringly, might cause the universe to end (only ours, not anyone else's.)

There are hundreds of parallel universes, each one a little different from the next. One man figures out that if he kills his parallels in these other universes, he becomes more powerful. He comes to a universe much like ours to kill the last one, but he is pursued by two lawmen from his universe and he must face his parallel self, who becomes as parallel as him. Lots of violence and action, with "Matrix"-like special effects and Chinese martial arts. Very exciting and fast-paced.
