A woman goes back to an orphanage she used to call home that is haunted by a little boy. Laura is moving back to the orphanage where she grew up. She brings her husband and son Simon. Simon starts talking to an imaginary friend Tomas, who has a sack covering his head. At a reception party at the house, Laura and Simon have an argument, which sends Simon to run away somewhere. By the end of the night, he is missing and Laura and her husband worry. They suspect a strange lady, Benigna, who passed by the house earlier.

Law enforcements are called in to investigate the boy's disappearance but they find no leads. Weeks later, Benigna is killed in an accident and the police identify her as Tomas' mother. Benigna was a former employee of the orphanage, and Tomas who was deformed, drowned in a cave near the coast as part of a mean trick by the other children.
Her husband cannot take the pressure and leaves. Laura feels a strange presence in the house, and consults a spiritist. Laura is obsessed with finding out the truth so in a drug-induced state, Laura sees the children of the ghosts who used to reside in the house, and engages in a game with them. They then lead her to a secret stairwell hidden behind the closet that leads into the basement. The banister broke, and someone fell. She discovers Simon's body. She then realizes that the night of the party, she accidentally locked Simon in the hidden stairwell, who was hiding there upon the instructions of Tomas.
Laura cannot bear losing her son, so she commits suicide to be with him. She is now the orphanage's house mother, and Simon, Tomas, and the rest of the children welcome her with open arms.
Best part of story, including ending:
The direction, story, setting was eerily creepy. The house was a character in itself.
Best scene in story:
When Laura was playing a game where the ghost children started appearing one by one behind her.
Opinion about the main character:
She is devoted to her son and cannot contain her grief when she realizes that it was partly her fault he's dead.
