The Others is set on the small island of Jersey in Europe 1945. It is about a family living alone while waiting for its father to return from fighting in World War 2. The family consists of a mother (Kidman), her elder daughter and son. We then meet three starngers, two women and an elderly man (Sykes). They wish to work as servants in the house as they had worked their previously and enjoyed it.
We see that Kidman's children are allergic to sunlight and so the rooms they use are strictly closed off from sunlight. Another house rule is to keep all doors locked. No two doors are to be opened at the same time, the previous door must be shut before the next one is opened. This keeps the sunlight out which could kill the children.

We then start to see strange things going on. The daughter drawing pictures of two men, a boy called Victor and a scary old woman who she says has been in the house. We also hear the piano being played but no one is in the lockrd room. We also see that the servants are somehow conspiring against the family.

Kidman is a strict theist and follows the Bible closely, she tries hunting the 'intruders' with a shot-gun but cannot find them. She scolds her daughter for nonsense about ghosts until she hears them herself, two women and a man calling at the same time. Fearing she is having another 'crazy' episode she runs out in the fog to get the local priest to bless the house.

She doesn't get far when she meets her husband who is on his way home. He is ill and in shock but warmly reunites with his family before sinking into depression. That is until Kidman nearly strangles her daughter to deth seeing the face of the old woman on her. The husband and wife make love before he disappears the next morning presumably returning to thr front-lines.

Then all the curtains in the house are stolen, making Kidman fire her staff while searching the house for them. It is here that she comes across a hidden photo in the servants room of themselves dated in 1891- a long time dead...

A great film that will keep you in suspense all the way through. A thought provoking film, which will make you say 'Ahh' with knowing and realisation at the end. You'll want to watch it again to see where you missed the clues. Great performances from all the cast.
