Christine (Emmy Rossum) is a young singer/actress at the Paris Opera. She has an angelic voice which she owes to her unseen mentor "The Phantom" (Gerard Butler) who resides in the depths of the opera house. The Phantom commits atrocious accidents in the opera house whenever his songbird isn't given her due. When Christine gets her big break one night, she is seen by her childhood sweetheart Raoul (Patrick Wilson), who courts her. Enraged by jealousy, The Phantom kidnaps her and brings her to his underground lair. There she gets an intimate glimpse at him and sees his genius and sensitivity. Raoul runs to her rescue only to face the wrath of an insane and misunderstood creature.
