McQueen, playing the role of Jake Holman, gives one of his best performances. Set in China mostly aboard the U.S.S. San Pablo, a gunboat sent there for “diplomatic and
political” purposes, McQueen finds himself facing a number of personal conflicts as well.

Directed by Robert Wise, the film dramatically shows the love that transcends nationalities and ethnic backgrounds. The movie is not without its violent moments, poignantly captured by Wise and his crew. Sir Richard Attenborough, Richard Crenna, and Candice Bergen give stellar supporting roles. As depressing as the conclusion is, “The Sand
Pebbles” pulls no punches--it's a film that is a credit to the industry.
