When young Hester Prynne (Demi Moore) arrives in the New World to set up home for herself and her husband Roger (Robert Duvall), she finds the ways of her fellow townspeople old fashioned and pious. Living in this puritan community proves to be difficult for her, and she is met with disapproval by most of the community. She falls in love with her pastor Arthur Dimsdale (Gary Oldman), but they resist all tempations for some months.

When Hester receives news that her husband is missing believed dead, she and Arthur begin an affair and she falls pregnant. The community elders then arrest her for fornication, and she is forced to wear a read symbol on her dress to mark her shame. Just when she is made a pariah by the elders, Roger Prynne arrives in the town under the name of Chillingworth. He finds Hester and threatens to kill Arthur, but first begins a killing spree in order to 'cleanse' the town of evil.
