Sharon Curley is an Irish working class teen who lives with her large family in the suburbs. Her parents are appalled when she tells them she is pregnant, but they quickly decide they have no choice but to accept the situation. They invite her to stay on so they can help her raise the baby. Despite their willingness to roll with the punches, they're left with one burning question that makes the ill at ease: Who is the baby's father?

At first, Sharon claims not to know, but when she sees her parents' horrified reaction to the implications of that claim (that she may have slept around and so can't even pin down the father) she corrects herself by saying she does know but won't tell. Sharon does know who the father is. One night during a drunken encounter at a party, she hooked up with George--her friend's middle-aged father. The only two who know about the soiree are Sharon and George. Sharon develops a growing resentment against George.
When he confronts her in a mall and begs her to run away with him she laughs in his face. Rumors start going around that George is the father but Sharon fiercely denies it. She makes up a story about a Spanish sailor coming on shore and getting her pregnant during a one-night stand. The neighbors, still convinced that George is the culprit, turn on him violently.
Sharon is so fed up with her father's bar brawls in defense of her reputation that she threatens to move out and raise the baby on her own. After a heart-to-heart with her father, she decides to stay. The baby is born. Once the sedatives wear off she is amused to discover that she has named the baby Georgina. She and her family are so overjoyed by the new arrival, that it eclipses all the conflicts preceding the birth.
