Threatened by its success, an ice cream executive hires a former FBI agent, Rutherford, to find out exactly what's in the Stuff and destroy it. What he finds is terrifying - the Stuff is actually a living organism that overtakes the human brain and turns people into mindless shells.

Jason, a young boy, also finds this out after seeing how his family reacts to the Stuff. He runs through the grocery store in an attempt to destroy their stock of it, but is arrested. This leads Rutherford to him. The two team up and, with the help of an ad executive, set out to destroy the bubbling source of the Stuff.

Meanwhile, the military is working to combat the growing armies of those afflicted by the stuff across the nation. But if Jason and Rutherford don't act quickly, the entire world might become a victim of The Stuff.
