Abby Richter is a TV producer from Sacramento, California. Abby believes in true love. One day, she hears Mike Chadway on a TV show speaking cynically about relationships. She decides to call and argue with him. She finds out the next day that her show is about to be cancelled because of ratings, and that Mike Chadway is going to do a segment on her show to help the ratings. The two don't get along at first. When Abby meets a guy she likes named Colin, Mike tells her to follow his advice if she wants to get him to like her. The two agree to a deal, if his advice works then Mike can stay on her show. If his advice doesn't work then he has to leave the show. Mike improves the ratings of the show. Mike is offered another job at another show. Abby cancels her romantic weekend with Colin to go to Mike and get him to stay on her show. The two drink and dance. Abby realizes that she is developing feelings for Mike.
