In a post-apocalyptic world, Baron (Sydow) leads a small band in what remains of New York City. One of his men has developed seeds which can grow in the harsh environment and are therefore necessary to rebuild civilization. However, they are under attack by a more powerful group led by Carrot (Smith), so Baron hires the mercenary Carson (Brynner).

When Baron realizes that, even with Carson's help, his situation is hopeless, he gives Carson the task of getting his daughter Melinda (Miles) and the seeds out of the city to somewhere where they can hopefully flourish. After overwhelming Baron and his people, Carrot and his warriors pursue Carson and Melinda. In the end, it comes down to a one-on-one duel, in which Carson has to chop off his own hand in order to kill Carrot.
Best part of story, including ending:
It's not totally unwatchable, though it isn't anywhere close to Mad Max standards. (What was Sydow thinking, though, when he took this job?)
Best scene in story:
The final fight, if I absolutely have to choose.
Opinion about the main character:
His fighting skills aren't particularly good, cinematically speaking.
