The Thornberry family travels together to make nature documentary films. The group is comprised of Nigel (Curry) the shows host, wife Marianne, daughters Debbie (Harris), and Eliza (Chabert), along with an adopted feral child called Donnie (Flea) and Eliza's pet monkey, Darwin (Kane). When things go wrong on a family outing Eliza is blamed for the trouble. Sent to a snooty London boarding school by her grandmother (Redgrave) she is deemed too precocious. It seems Eliza and Darwin are just unable to keep a low profile.

Meanwhile, a ruthless poacher named Blackburn (Everett) and his equally evil minded wife Bree (Tomei) has captured a baby cheetah in Africa. They will stop at nothing to get their illegal booty. First seeking to save the young cub then attempting to reunite with her family Eliza risks losing her gift of talking to animals in order to rescue her sister Debbie from peril. The film has a good mixture of sweet morality, silly adventure and thrilling mishaps to make it enjoyable for a wide range of school aged children.
