Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The X-Files: I Want to Believe

Former FBI agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder team up once again to help solve a mysterious disappearance with the help of a psychic. A former priest discovers a severed limb under heavy snow in Virginia. He claims to the FBI he's been led by a vision. Special Agent Dakota Whitney believes it to be connected to the recent disappearance of another FBI agent. She contacts Dana Scully, who is now working as a doctor, to help her find Fox Mulder and bring him in on the investigation. Despite being retired from the FBI, Mulder is still obsessed with the paranormal. He agrees to help only if Scully will join him, which she does.

We see another woman being kidnapped by a man. The priest, Father Joe, has another vision and leads the FBI together with Mulder and Scully to a mass grave. Dana is skeptical of Father Joe's supposed visions because of his criminal past, fueling her doubts of her faith. She is also struggling at the Catholic hospital where she works. A young boy needs stem-cell treatment, but his god-fearing parents are pressured to refuse this path by the hospital's resident priest. Mulder tries to console her even though he believes in Father Joe's powers.

The FBI's investigation leads them to a Russian immigrant organ transporter who is involved with one of Father Joe's former victims. While chasing him, agent Whitney is killed and the suspect escapes. Mulder tracks him down to an isolated facility. There we see that Russian speaking doctors are performing body transplants using the kidnapped women. Mulder is captured and on the verge of being killed when Scully arrives and saves him. They manage to rescue the one prisoner still alive and put an end to the grotesque experiments.

With the case solved, all knowledge of Father Joe's psychic assistance is suppressed. Scully and Mulder comfort each other as their questions are left unanswered.
Best part of story, including ending: For someone who is only barely familiar with the TV series, the main characters are still well defined and the story asks the question: Should one rely on faith in the intangible or act according to one's own judgement?

Best scene in story: My favourite scene is the opening, during which we see the kidnapping of the FBI agent juxtaposed with Father Joe leading a row of policemen through a snowy field. These two events occur days apart, but they are skillfully edited together to great effect.

Opinion about the main character: Dana Scully is trying to do the right thing in spite of her faith, while Mulder's actions are based in it. They have different ways of seeing the world even though their intentions are mostly the same.
