Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Thoroughly Modern Millie

Millie (Julie Andrews) is a "modern" girl in New York City in 1922, having just bobbed her hair and acquired a flapper wardrobe. Intending to find a rich boss to marry, she lands a job as secretary to handsome bachelor Trevor Graydon (John Gavin) at Sincere Trust. Alas, Trevor nicknames her "John" and prefers her frillier new friend Dorothy, (Mary Tyler Moore,) a rich, bubble-headed aspiring actress who has just moved in across the hall from Millie's room at the Priscilla Hotel for Single Young Ladies. Neither knows that the proprietor, Mrs. Meers, (Beatrice Lillie,) has sinister plans for girls like Dorothy who are "all alone in the world."

Millie dates a seemingly aimless thrill-seeker named Jimmy, (James Fox,) on the understanding that she still intends to marry her boss. Funloving Jimmy makes up a new dance with her called "The Tapioca," and recklessly teaches her to drive. He flies her to a lavish party at the mansion of a charmingly eccentric widow named Muzzy, (Carol Channing) whose hobbies include performing acrobatics and learning rope tricks from her Spanish butler. Muzzy advises Millie to follow her heart and not her plan.

But when Millie sees Jimmy invite Dorothy into his room, she drops him. Undaunted, Jimmy persists, even scaling the outside wall of Millie's workplace to the 20th floor just to ask her for a date. As if Millie's life isn't busy enough with parties, men, and the ongoing need to tapdance in her hotel's elevator to keep it from stalling, Dorothy suddenly disappears. Trevor, Jimmy, and Millie make it their mission to find her.
