In 1957 the great Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa transposed Shakespeare's "Macbeth" to medieval Japan. The result, also titled "The Castle of the Spider's Web" or "Cobweb Castle," is a very atmospheric, action-filled picture that changes the appearance of Shakespeare but not the spirit. The three witches become one eerie soothsayer in the deep forest; Birnam Wood does indeed come to Dunsinane, but in a very nice touch, his own men turn on our antihero Lord Washizu (Mifune, titanically compelling, as always). His growing look of fearful comprehension when the first arrow from INSIDE his castle hits the wall next to him is unforgettable.
