Clint Eastwood stars as Wes Block, a New Orleans detective who's divorced and taking care of his two daughters. Someone has started killing beautiful women who lead sexually extravagant lifestyles. Block gets assigned to the case and starts to go to the seedy sex clubs around the city. After questioning the women Block would have sex with them. At the same time Block forms a relationship with a rape counselour Beryl Thibodeaux (Genevieve Bujold) who came to him looking for information. The serial rapist/murderer remains elusive and starts to play games with Block by sending him a doll with a message typed on a business card. Block figures out the coded message but it's too late to save the woman as she turned out to be the next victim. While struggling to keep his daughters safe and getting involved with Beryl, the killer makes things personal by killing Block's housemaid and attacking before getting away. While on the police were searching for the killer he became more brazen and attacked Beryl. Block gets there just in time to save her and chase after the killer who meets a grisly demise.
