To Be or Not To Be (1983) Movie Review Summary

Actors: Mel Brooks, Anne Bancroft

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of To Be or Not To Be (1983)

Frederick and Anne Bronski are famous actors in a variety show in Poland around the beginning of WW2. They get pulled into a pickle by Lt. Sobinski(whom Anna had a short lived liaison with) where they must stop a list of names of people in the Polish underground from getting into german hands. It sounds serious but it is accually a very funny Mel Brooks movie. Anne Bancroft(Brooks' real life wife) does a wonderful job also.

A remake of the 1942 Jack Benny classic, "To Be or Not
To Be" this time is directed, produced, and acted by Mel Brooks. Changes from the original include making the actors Jewish and adding some zany musical numbers. Still it preserves the laugh-a-minute status (only in color this time)and its scathing attack on the Nazi insenibilities.
Fun, yet sentimental. Good show, Mr. Brooks!
