Gino Strabliggi, a former bank robber, has just been freed after eleven years in prison. Jean Gabin, a social worker, helps him in his efforts to be rehabilitated. Strabliggi finds a job as a printer and manages to resist the temptations of his past.
Unfortunately, Strabliggi's wife dies in a car accident and Michel Bouquet, the police lieutenant who arrested him eleven years before, is back in town. Bouquet will harass and provoke Strabliggi so much that the young man will finally kill the policeman during a fit of anger.
The last part of the film which describes Strabliggi's trial is a merciless indictment of the death penalty still current in France during the early seventies.
