Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Upstream Color

Everything Kris owns is stolen when a thief implants a worm in her that allows him to control her actions, just as he has done to others Kris meets as she pieces her life together in the months that follow. Kris is a normal young woman who is kidnapped and drugged by a thief who exploits her hypnotized mental state to steal everything of value she owns. The drug Kris is administered contains a live roundworm that is the agent of her mental confusion. In the days that follow her attack, the thief lives with Kris in her house and empties all of her financial accounts and steals personal items of value. In the meantime Kris is allowed no solid food and can only drink portioned amounts of water at specific intervals. Days later, the thief allows Kris to eat and leaves her house. With food in her system, Kris is awakened somewhat to her surroundings and is horrified to see the shape of a worm crawling under her skin. Her attempts to remove it with a knife are unsuccessful.

Soon after, Kris is drawn to a farm outside of town when a pig farmer projects low resonant frequencies into the ground that attract the worms used in her attack and hypnosis. Kris walks to the farm in a dreamlike state and is hooked by tubes to one of the farmer's pigs. The worms leave Kris's body and enter the pig's. Kris is abandoned by the highway and awakes with her mental faculties intact but no memory of the horrible events that she has experienced. In the coming days she finds that she has no job, no money, and unexplained injuries.
Some amount of time passes. Kris has a job selling signage and is still deeply traumatized. She meets Jeff and the two begin an awkward but intense relationship. Jeff lies to her about a number of things about himself which disturbs Kris greatly until she discovers that Jeff has the same scars she does, but no memory of how they came to be. She and Jeff share a kind of psychic connection because they were both attacked and infested. They begin to regain memories of their lives, but the one often remembers the experiences of the other.
When the the pig farmer finds that the pig with Kris's worms has a litter of piglets he throws them into a river to drown. When the piglets die Kris experiences acute anxiety for reasons she can't understand. Jeff is also emotionally linked to the pig that received his worms. The two continue to experience premonitions and emotions of no clear origin, including a sense of the sound of running water. They eventually return to the farm where they kill the farmer and try to live in peace with the pigs and other victims they are able to contact.
Best part of story, including ending: The direction and general vibe of the movie is impressionistic and beautiful. It's like nothing I've ever seen.

Best scene in story: The time Kris spends with the thief in her hypnotized state is deliciously horrifying.

Opinion about the main character: Kris's relationship with the world around her is a concrete illustration of a kind of metaphysical connection to the natural world that might exist but is outside of our understanding.
