Dawn listens to the band practice, fawning over Steve and singing along with the lyrics. She deludes herself into believing she has a chance with Steve, so when Brandon asks her to be his boyfriends she refuses.
When Dawn catches Steve with another girl, she realizes she can't have him. She tries to get Brandon back, but it's too late. He's running away to avoid being sent to military school. There's also a subplot that involves Dawn's jealousy of her beautiful, spoiled, and seemingly perfect little sister. One day Dawn decides not to tell Missy to get a ride home with another student from Ballet class. Missy stands around waiting for her mother who can't make it and ends up getting kidnapped. Dawn feels so guilty that she secretly goes looking for her sister in the city. She imagines she'll be a hero when she finds her. Unfortunately her parents barely notice she gone. Missy turns up anyway. A neighbor had kidnapped her and held her hostage in his basement where she enjoyed TV privileges and all the ice cream she could eat. Much to her relief, Dawn finally finds a sense of belonging by joining the school chorus where her voice can at last be heard.
