Charles Bronson plays Wild Bill Hickok. Hickok is haunted by dreams in which he is run down and killed by a white buffalo. He wakes from the dream one night and decides he must go after a white buffalo if he is to have any peace. In the meantime, an Indian village is raided and mainly Indians are killed. A young Indian child is killed. Crazy Horse, played by Will Sampson, prepares the child for his death bed. But one thing is missing. His religion says the child must be wrapped in the hide of a white buffalo in order to go on to the afterlife. Hickok and Crazy Horse begin their quest to find the white buffalo and eventually their paths cross and they help each other complete their mission. The story mainly takes place in the Black Hills and Deadwood of South Dakota.
