Based on Robert Stone's novel Dog Soldiers, this movie stars Nick Nolte as Vietnam veteran Ray Hicks. While in Vietnam Ray gets approached by his buddy John Converse (Michael Moriarty) to smuggle 2 kilos of heroin into America. Ray carries the coke into San Francisco and sets up a meeting with John's wife Marge (Tuesday Weld) to pick up the money and drop off the dope. Marge doesn't have it. Ray spots a couple of bad federal agents who tailed him. They attack the house looking for the dope but Ray subdues them and he takes off with Marge to Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, John comes back home and finds out another rogue narcotics agent was looking for him. Now all three torture him to find out where the drugs went. Hicks tries to sell the dope to a friend of his named Eddie Peace
(Charles Haid). Eddie wants nothing to do with this action but Ray insists they try to sell it. Eddie sets up a buy with a couple of rich people but the deal goes sour so Ray and Marge take off to the Mexican border. The narcotics agent finds out through a connection that Ray and Marge are down there. This sets the stage for a final showdown with Ray, John, and Marge trying to survive the ordeal with the narcotics agents.
