The setting is Jamaica 150 years ago. A British young man, Edward Rochester, comes to Jamaica in order to marry Antoinette Cosway, a young girl coming from a ruined family of planters. Both leave for the Jamaican countryside in the until then abandoned Cosway mansion. The couple gets along pretty well until the day Edward is contacted by Antoinette's half-brother who tells Edward that Antoinette is coming from a family of lunatics. Edward, being more and more homesick, starts to more closely observe his wife's behaviour. Suspicion and lies will soon completely destroy this once happy marriage.
