Helena Bonham Carter is back in a costume drama here, appearing as Kate Croy. Kate's mom is dead and her dad's a drunkard, but she's been taken in by a wealthy aunt who wants to find her niece a suitable, i.e., rich, husband. Kate, though, is in love with Merton, an impoverished journalist, whom Auntie dismisses as a marriage prospect. So Kate concocts a scheme whereby Merton romances Milly, an American heiress who is conveniently at death's door. Hopefully Milly will be so swept away by her feelings for Merton that she'll bequeath him her fortune, allowing Kate and her lover to live happily ever after. At first, Kate's strategm seems to be working, but there are pitfalls she hadn't counted on.
