Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Wreck of the Mary Deare

A small salvage boat almost collides with a freighter during a storm. The captain of salvage boat (Charlton Heston) boards the apparently deserted freighter under difficult conditions. He is elated at what promises to be a lucrative salvage operation. This is short-lived however, as he discovers the half-crazed captain (Gary Cooper) still aboard. Due to worsening weather, he is stranded on the freighter. To his horror he discovers the captain intends to beach the ship on a reef. He tries to stop him, but is either convinced or indimidated into cooperating. The two men head for shore in a life boat and are rescued.

The second half of the film covers the inquest into the wreck. The motives of the troubled captain are gradually revealed. He emerges as a troubled, uncommunicative, but honest man, who is the victim of an unscrupulous owner.
