The Eternity Code - Artemis Fowl Book 3 Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Eternity Code - Artemis Fowl Book 3

Artemis Fowl is in trouble and has put the fairy people in danger as well but together they save everyone, except for Artemis' mind. Artemis Fowl has a plan. His father has risen from his hospital bed determined to make his family finances and enterprises one hundred percent legal. Artemis, his thirteen year old son, has one more job in mind. After all, he had set up the meeting with Jon Spiro way before his father regained consciousness. Butler, his bodyguard, is on high alert. He glares at most of the people in the restaurant expecting an attack. Artemis is not concerned. After all, they are in a restaurant in the middle of the day. Surely, he wouldn't be assassinated in public.

Jon Spiro arrives with pomp and circumstance. Butler has heard of Spiro's body guard Arno Blunt. Arno Blunt also knows of Butler's reputation. It is an uneasy silence that settles over the table. The air gets even more thick when Jon Spiro declares that he isn't here for lunch and to get down to business. Artemis was hoping to discuss the deal over lunch but begins his presentation. Artemis has on the table a mini-computer that can hack into anything including satellites. Spiro's first question is about the legality of such a device. Artemis is amused. A shady businessman with “alleged” mob connection just asked if the technology is illegal. Artemis reassures him that laws concerning such technology have yet to be made.
Jon Spiro asks for several demonstrations of what the device can do. The final demonstration detects a CIA satellite honing in on their location. Then, Spiro simply announces that he is going to leave with the cube. Butler and Arno Blunt prepare for violence. However, it was a trap. The other customers in the restaurant are assassins who work for Spiro, even the eighty year old woman that Artemis dismissed earlier as definitely not an assassin.
Artemis and Butler have a little back up. There is a fairy bomb located underneath their table and the trigger is a word phrase. Butler begins the phrase and the eighty year old woman completes it. Setting off an explosion that shattered teeth and damaged ears. They were almost home free except Arno has ear plugs. When Butler goes to check if anyone else is going to attack them, Arno gets up aims and fires. Butler returns with only seconds to do something. He jumps in front of Artemis. Butler dies. Artemis knows that he must keep the brain cool in order to prevent brain damage. So he empties the fish freezer and puts Butler in and leaves before the authorities arrive. He rents a cryogenics pod for one night and goes in search of Holly. All he has to do is say key words into the telephone and he knows the fairy monitoring system will pick up. So he strings together every fairy related word he can think of and Holly, the fairy arrives, not really thrilled to see him again.
However, she puts her guns away to call Foaly when she is informed Butler is dead. She is unsure even she can heal the dead. However, Foaly guides her through it. The results are that Butler will live but he will not be able to protect Artemis. He has kevlar around his chest making it difficult to breath and he has aged fifteen years because Holly had to use some of his life force to save him. When the healing is done, Artemis casually mentions he may know something about the device that has fairyland on high alert and the entire city shutdown. Holly whisks him away to his home in Ireland to continue the conversation in private. He tells her what he has done.
Meanwhile, Spiro has discovered that he cannot break the encryption of the C-Cube. He needs Artemis. He delegates the task of bringing Artemis to him to the Antonelli Crime Family. Mo Digence, the mob breaking and entering expert, recognizes Fowl Manor immediately. He is not really Mo Digence. He is Mulch Diggums, the dwarf. He comes with a plan to rile his partner and warn Artemis. However, he forgets to turn his communication device off so his hothead partner hears the whole warning and his real name. Juliet, Butler's sister. arrives just in time to save them all. Holly mind-wipes the mob man and deposits him in a village in Africa. Arthur plans the heist. He gives each of them, except Butler. a cd and tells them to memorize the plan and burn it. He has orchestrated it so that no one knows all of the plan. Everyone's cd only contains the part they play in it.
Mulch takes Artemis to Spiro. Artemis stalls and waits for fairy rescue. Law enforcement gets called. Artemis disappears from human sight with Holly's handiwork.Spiro is arrested. The things that are not included in the plan is Artemis' call to conscience. He has access to Spiro's bank accounts but only takes ten percent of the money and sends the rest to Amnesty International. He wants to make his father proud. Unfortunately, the agreement with the fairies was that they could wipe his mind. As usual, Artemis has a plan. He awakes from the mind wipe, with no memory of the fairies but find mysterious contact lenses in his eyes. He is no longer the same boy who gave money to Amnesty International. The mind wipe has turned him back to the criminal mastermind he was at twelve.
Best part of story, including ending: I really liked the suspense. The whole time of the heist, the reader thinks things are not going to work out. However, it was all a part of the plan.

Best scene in story: My favorite scene is when Butler is dying. It is a pivotal moment where Artemis realizes how much his actions affect others. He also learns Butler's true name is Domovoi, a name he was forbidden to use since he was trained to be a bodyguard/assassin.

Opinion about the main character: I like the wit of Artemis. He is not only smart, clever and brave. He is still a child and he uses his boyish looks to his advantage.

This is the third Artemis Fowl book. Artemis Fowl is a teenage criminal mastermind. However, his father will soon be coming back home, which means that Artemis will have to quit his criminal activities. Before he does this, he decides he has time for one more adventure, something that may restore the Fowl family fortune. He has created the C Cube, a powerful computer based on fairy technology. He plans on making a deal with a businessman named Jon Spiro, but the deal goes sour, and Artemis suddenly finds himself in need of help from the very beings he stole the technology from: the fairies.
