Bonnie and Sylvia seek to survive the wrath of and regain their fortune from their corrupt governess. Bonnie lives in a beautiful mansion in the country. Mischievous but warm-hearted, she eagerly embraces her timid cousin Sylvia who comes to stay with her. The girls are watched by Miss Slighcarp, a strict governess taking charge in Bonnie's parents' absence. However, Bonnie's fortunes depart with the sailing of her parents' ship.

Aided by her accomplice Mr. Grimshaw, Miss Slighcarp takes total control of the house, Willoughby Chase, doing as she pleases, spending money on herself, and treating Bonnie and Sylvia like bothersome insects. When Bonnie finds out that Miss Slighcarp arranged for her parents' ship to ‘accidentally' sink, she frantically writes to a friend, pleading for help and justice. However, Miss Slighcarp discovers her plan and, fed up with the girls, sends them to an orphanage in the city.
At the orphanage the girls are treated like slaves, working hard under the cruel eye of Mrs. Brisket. As the hard work and poor food take its toll on weak Sylvia, Bonnie resolves to escape. She hatches a daring plan and the girls break out of the orphanage and manage evade the police. They start walking to London, where they hope the late father's lawyer can help them.
After months of travel they reach London and bring the lawyer and the police to Willoughby Chase, where Miss Slighcarp is running a profitable boarding school. Entering through a secret servant passage, the company confronts Miss Slighcarp, who properly punished. Having regained their house, the girls receive another moment of joy when Bonnie's parents return, having survived the shipwreck. And with this happy reunion, the thrilling story filled with escapades and danger concludes.

Bonnie and Sylvia are locked in the drawing room so they will not bother anyone. Bonnie discovers a secret passage leading into the kitchen, which had only been a rumor.

Bonnie is brave and hopeful even when all hope seems to be lost.
Soon after orphan Sylvia comes to live with her wealthy relatives, her aunt and uncle leave on an extended trip, leaving Sylvia and her spirited cousin Bonnie in the care of their governess, Miss Slighcarp.
Bonnie's parents are reported dead in a shipwreck, and Miss Slighcarp turns on her young charges, firing the household staff and sending the cousins away to an orphanage. Together, Bonnie and Sylvia must escape and try to reclaim their home.
