The first person he meets is the Blue Man. In conversation with him he gets to know that as a child playing with a ball Eddie was responsible for a car accident that caused the Blue Man's death.

The next person Eddie meets is the man who was his Captain during the war. From him he learns that the bullet shot that caused Eddie to suffer acute knee ache through out his life was fired by him.

The third person he meets is Ruby a lady whom he had never really met in life but who told him how and why his father was the way he was, and how he died.

Then he meets his beloved wife Marguerite who had died of cancer at the young age of 47. Talking to her he finally comes to terms with the anger he had always felt at his wife's early death.

Finally he meets the young girl he had tried to save from the fire while he was trying to escape a prison camp during the war in Phillipines. This tale begins when an amusement park accident tragically kills Eddie "Maintenance", an eighty-three-year old man who dedicated his life to keeping the park safe for its hundreds of guests. From the start of this story, Eddie's character is incredibly well-guarded; the reader learns very little about him other than that he is a simple and humble man who takes great pride in his established routine of reporting to work and caring for his family.
As Eddie reaches heaven, the setting for the majority of this novel, this shroud of secrecy is quickly removed. While there, Eddie gains insight into his life and, for the first time, sees how his actions impacted so many others. As he embarks on his journey, he meets five people, each of whom have been anxiously awaiting for his entrance into heaven.
Some of the people who initiate these meetings offer an extensive introduction since, when Eddie was alive, he was unaware of their existence. For others there is no need for an introduction since they played a prominent role in Eddie's life.

This story begins at the end of Eddie's life. Eddie dies in a tragic accident at the amusment park where Eddie has worked nearly all his long life. After dying Eddie discovers that heaven is not a Garden of Eden, but a place where your life is explained to you by 5 people who were in it.
Eddie meet his wife, his old army captain, the women whom the amusment park was named after, and two people who died because of Eddie's innocent actions.
All those people shaped and were shaped by Eddie's life. Eddie discovers that his life wasn't meaningless.

The Five People You Meet In Heaven is about an elderly amusement park maintenance man named Eddie. He served in the war and was wounded, leaving him with a permanent physical disability. He is angry with his life as he feels he had to give up his own goals. He feels robbed of his own prospects by the war and those around him.
On his 83rd birthday, Eddie is killed trying to save a little girl from being crushed by a ride in the park.
He awakens in heaven where he, in turn, meets five people whose purpose it is to explain to Eddie the events of his life. Some people he knows very well, others are strangers, yet all had an impact in his life and changed each others paths.
It is Eddie's job to find closure for the events during his lifetime and to ascertain whether he did in fact save the little girl at the amusement park.

The book focuses on an 83 year old, Eddie, who is the maintenance man at Ruby Point Amusement Grounds. It begins with a short descript about the man moments before his death. As the story continues, the audience finds Eddie travelling through his life and meeting people whom he had affected during his lifetime.

As Eddie meets each person, he learns how closely intertwined his life was with theirs both knowingly and unknowingly and in turn learns something more about himself. Through their stories, he finds the meaning of his own existence.
