Eventually Dobbs gets on the ballot in 13 states, leading to his acceptance in several debates, where he performs well. As he surges in the polls, his manager Jack (Christopher Walken) begins to think he has a serious chance of winning.

Meanwhile, Eleanor (Laura Linney) is a worker for a voting machine company and notices an error in their machines' code. She raises objections to the president of the company, but they go unanswered.

Eventually Dobbs wins the presidency - to everyone's shock. Elenor , now fired for speaking up, decides to tell Dobbs himself, impersonating a federal agent to meet him, but she doesn't have the heart to tell him the truth.

The two strike up a romance, going on a series of dates. But eventually Eleanor can't handle it and tells Dobbs the truth - he is not the rightful president. Dobbs struggles with what to do, but eventually decides to tell the nation of her findings.

But the voting machine company, Delacroy, pre-empts his message and paints Eleanor as a lunatic. Eleanor becomes increasingly fearful of her safety, with Delacroy workers breaking into her hotel room and following her. She's also unable to be reached by Dobbs.

So Dobbs begins a struggle to find Eleanor, protect her, and break the news to the nation once and for all.
