Anthropology of an American Girl Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Anthropology of an American Girl

Anthropology of an American Girl follows a young girl named Eveline, beginning with her time in high school. In high school Eveline has a great boyfriend and a best friend who lives with her after her own mother had died. Eveline's friend has a crush on an older guy, Roark, who is helping the drama club put on a production, but it's Eveline who ends up falling in love with him. They have a tumultuous relationship and when Eveline graduates she goes to stay with him for a while. She ends up getting pregnant and has a miscarriage. Roark leaves Eveline because of a secret life he has where he is helping out a woman that his friend impregnated and left. Eveline ends up engaged to the man Roark is helping, though she doesn't know the full story. Throughout the book Eveline mainly pines for Roark and tries to decipher why he left her.

Best part of story, including ending: I hated that Eveline had no basis for her feelings for Roark. He sat down next to her and they magically were in love, never having met before.

Best scene in story: My favorite scene is probably when Eveline finally leaves the other man and he has her pinned down on the balcony. She doesn't know that Roark is standing out of sight, trying to make sure she's okay. It's my favorite scene because it was very vivid.

Opinion about the main character: I dislike Eveline's pouting and whiny nature.
