Robin Hood (Crowe) fought in the crusades under Richard the Lionheart. Richard gets killed and Robin Hood decides to leave his army, when he gets frustrated with all the fighting. He goes back to England and he manages to do so under the false pretense of being a knight, who was killed in action. Impersonating that man, he has to inform the court that the king is dead and return the knight's sword to his father in Nottingham. He keeps his word and delivers the sword. The knight's father asks him to pretend to be his son a bit longer to prevent his estate from being seized by the Crown. The wife of the dead knight, Lady Marian (Blanchett), is won over, when he stands up for the local people and gives them back the grain, that was confiscated by the king's men. While doing these things, he comes to know who his real father was and what he tried to accomplish, a united British isles under one king. In his spirit, he manages to unite the various noblemen to fight jointly against invading French troops. And because of that, the new king of England ultimately sees him as a threat to his throne and he has to flee. The story ends with him and Lady Marian living in the woods of Sherwood with a group of runaway children.

Best part of story, including ending:
Robin Hood gets out of the social and political structures of his times and builds his own life, together with Lady Marian and a group of children, in the woods, building a new Britain, so to speak.
Best scene in story:
The last scene where Robin Hood and Lady Marian dance/walk around each other and he lifts her up.
Opinion about the main character:
Robin Hood makes use of the situation to optimize his own, but never in an immoral way.
