Chris McCandless (Emile Hirsch) just graduated from college and decides he doesn't want to go to Harvard, although his grades are sufficiently high. Instead he goes on a trip through the American West, because he wants to explore another life rather than just be part of consumer society. Along the way he meets several interesting people, e.g. a hippie couple, who he gets attached to. But he doesn't stay anywhere, as his goal is to travel to Alaska and live off of what nature provides. He manages to do so and lives a happy life for some time. The story ends with his death, caused by mistakingly chosing the wrong kind of seeds to eat. Based on the book by Jon Krakauer.

Best part of story, including ending:
It makes you think about the choices everybody makes and how much of it is just doing what everybody else does.
Best scene in story:
The scenes where the people he meets along the way show their care for him. They realize he is a good kid, taking enormous chances with his life.
Opinion about the main character:
He goes out there to explore a different kind of life because he doesn't believe in just going along with what everybody else does. That's a courageous thing to do. Sadly, it didn't work out in the end.
