Based on a true story, Richard Gere plays Parker, a professor living with his wife (Joan Allen) and his daughter in an East Coast suburb. One day he befriends a lonely stray dog, Hachi. He takes him in and they start a unique bond and friendship. Hachi, an Akita, is extraordinarily loyal and follows Parker to the commuter rail station and waits for him there until he comes home from University. This goes on for years, to the astonishment of commuters who see this everyday. One day, Parker doesn't come back and passes away. Hachi continues to go back to the train station everyday, waiting for his owner, until his own passing.
