Docters tell King that his wife is never going to wake up again, which is actually a death sentence, because his wife put in her will that she wants to be taken of life-support if she were ever to be in a situation where she would never recover. He now has to tell his daughters, other family members and friends.

When King tells his eldest daughter of 17, she tell him that her mother was having an affair. He runs over to a friends house to find out more about the affair. The friends know about the affair and tell him who the guy is. He turns out to be a local realtor, Brian Speer. He tries to find Speer, to give him a chance to say one last goodbye to his wife before she dies. He finds out where he lives and goes over there to see him. In the process of finding him, one of King's cousins (Beau Bridges) tells him that Speer is the realtor that is going to handle the development of the estate land, that King and his family is about to sell off, and stands to earn a lot of money from that, which gives him pause. He decides not to sell the land to that party, despite the fact that family members threaten him with a lawsuit.

King's wife is now dying after being disconnected, and family and friends come to say their goodbyes. Speer's wife, realizing that her husband had an affair with King's wife after he had visited with them, comes to the hospital instead of her husband, who is too shook up from being found out, afraid of loosing everything, while for him it was just a fling.

After Speer's wife leaves, King and his daughters say their final goodbyes. They scatter Elizabeth's ashes into the water off the coast.

The film closes with King and his daughters sitting on the couch, watching teevee, sharing ice cream and Elizabeth's last blanket.

Best part of story, including ending: It's a nice little story about life turbulences.

Best scene in story: When he runs over to the house of their friends, after being told his wife was having an affair.

Opinion about the main character: He is a civilized guy with none to extreme reactions to life events.
