Joe, like most teenagers, is tired of his dad trying to micromanage everything he does. He contemplates how to grab hold of freedom with his best friend Patrick and a fellow student, the oddball Biaggio. They stumble upon a patch of land deep in the woods where no one is likely to find them, and decide then and there to build a fort and live independently all summer long. They build their fort and run away, without telling their parents, deciding that they will be better on their own. Months pass, and the disappearance of Patrick and Joe has rocked the community in their town. Meanwhile, tension rises between the two, because Joe invites his crush to come see their fort, but his crush is clearly more interested in Patrick. Patrick decides to leave the fort and go home, disinterested in putting up with Joe's spite anymore. Joe, disgusted by Patrick's betrayal, commands Biaggio to go home as well, leaving him alone in the woods for weeks. After some time passes, Joe's crush tells Joe's dad where he can be found. They make their way into the woods, where Biaggio also runs into them. However, when Biaggio is bitten by a snake, Joe must decide whether it's time to go back into society to save his friend or remain living his life of solitude.
