Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) is a technology prodigy and billionaire. He owns Stark Industries, however it is run by Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges). On a weapons demo in Afghanistan, Tony's convoy is attacked and he is taken hostage by militants. Because of shrapnel in his body, a fellow hostage operates on him and puts a reactor in his chest to keep him alive. To escape, Tony builds an Iron Man suit, with an improved reactor. He escapes, only his friend is fatally wounded and dies. He is found in the dessert by American soldiers and returns to the States. With a new lease on life, Tony announces that he will discontinue Stark Industries' weapons contracts, seeing the damage its done. Obadiah strongly objects since this would mean loss of millions of profit. Tony then works on a new Iron suit, he completes it and flies to Afghanistan to destroy remaining Stark weapons, a battle ensues and Tony is successful. The militants are able to scavenge some parts of Tony's suit to recreate it. Obadiah meets with the militants, and is revealed as the mastermind behind Tony's abduction. He steals the suit and after tweaking it, wears it himself. Iron Man and Obadiah fight to the death outside Stark Industries, and Iron Man disables Obadiah by setting of a magnetic pulse that renders him weak. Tony faces the media and announces he's Iron Man. He is approached by Nick Fury and recruited by SHIELD.
