Kale (Shia LeBeouf) is a teen that has been placed on house arrest for punching his teacher. When he has a fight with his mom, she gets rid of all TV, computer, and videogaming privileges so out of boredom, he starts spying on his neighbor Robert Turner (David Morse), who he thinks is a serial killer. Robert's car matches a description announced in the news. He keeps spying with his bestfriend Ronnie, and starts watching the pretty girl nextdoor Ashley. Ashley sees them spying on her, and confronts them. The three become friends. One time, they see Robert with a woman over at his house, then see her freaking out. Moments later, the girl leaves the house, unscathed. Kale and Ashley find nothing wrong and then hook up. Although later, they see Robert dragging a bag to the garage. Ronnie breaks into the garage when Robert is out, making a video documentary. But when he gets trapped, Kale goes after him, triggering his ankle monitor. The police come and find a dead deer in the bag. Kale reviews Ronnie's video, and upon inspection, sees a dead girl. Meanwhile, Julie talks to Robert to apologize, soon Robert knocks Julie out. Best part of story, including ending: It's a thriller set in a seemingly uneventful and boring place, the burbs.

Best scene in story: When Kale sees the dead body on the video, he feels vindicated he's proven right, at the same time his worst fears creep up on him.

Opinion about the main character: Kale has a vivid imagination that proves him right in the end.
