When her best friend Rhiannon asks her to go camping, Olive lies in order to get out of it. Instead she stays home all weekend, but when Rhiannon presses her for details about the date Olive panics and makes up a story about losing her virginity to an older college boy.

Another student, the prudish Marianne, overhears and starts spreading the salacious gossip, leading to the whole school finding out. Marianne belongs to a religious student group, and they focus their attention on judging Olive for her behavior, causing a confrontation that sends Olive to detention.

With her reputation already in tatters, Olive agrees to pretend to date her closeted gay friend Brandon, who is being bullied. They feign having sex at a party to prove his straightness. At the same party she runs into Todd, a boy she used to have a crush on when they were younger.

Rhiannon hears about the supposed sexual encounter and accuses Olive of being a slut, causing a huge fight and a falling out between the two girls and leaving Olive with few allies. As a result she embraces her new identity as a supposed promiscuous girl and starts dressing provocatively. Not only that but in exchange for gift cards she pretends to sleep or fool around with several other guys to bolster their reputation, furthering her own as well.

Eventually things get out of hand when Marianne's boyfriend is diagnosed with an STD and claims he got it from Olive. With her reputation she knows no one will believe her denials, and when she finds out that the culprit was actually the school counselor's wife, she offers to take the blame in order to protect their marriage.

She's at an all time low when a cute boy asks her on a date, and cheered up she agrees and goes to dinner with him. However it turns out he thinks he can pay her sex and becomes aggressive and rude when she tells him no, storming out of the restaurant. Todd works at the restaurant and offers he a ride home, confessing that he doesn't believe her bad girl act, remembering that when they were younger she had told a similar lie for him, saying they had kissed when he was too shy to do it during a game of seven minutes in heaven.

Olive realizes she needs to clear everything up, and sets about confronting the people she has lied for. But she finds out that they might not agree with her plan.
Best part of story, including ending: I liked that it addressed the judgmental attitudes among high schoolers.

Best scene in story: I loved the first scene with Olive and her family, the banter is very good.

Opinion about the main character: I loved her intelligence and humor.
