Alex and his animal friends, Gloria, Marty, and Melman want to leave Africa to go back home to New York City. But their "ride," the chimps, have gone on a gambling spree in Monte Carlo. They follow them there, and catches the unwanted attention of Captain DuBois, an obsessive animal control officer, who keeps animals as souvenirs on her wall. With DuBois on their tail, Alex, his friends, plus the chimps, penguins, and lemurs seek refuge with a traveling circus, passing themselves as American circus animals. The circus is led by a bitter tiger, Vitaly, who used to do impossible tricks of flying into tiny hoops. When he is burned from an accident, he loses motivation to perform. There's also Gia, a trapeze leopard, Stefano, a clumsy seal, and a myriad of other animals. The circus is traveling to Rome, then London, to audition for an American promoter, who will put up a NYC show for them. Alex of course sees this as their chance to go home, and plays along with the circus charade. When the chimps buy the circus from the old owners, Alex and the crew discover in Rome, that the circus is a joke. They rally the troops, and create a new act in time for London. Meanwhile, DuBois is still after them. In London, the show is a smash, and they are signed by the promoter. Dubois appears and slips the truth about Alex being impostors to Vitaly and others. They all travel to NYC, but a rift has been made. Alex and co. go back to the zoo, and realize that it is not what they wanted. They decide to re-join the circus, but Dubois arrives and tranquilizes them, however, zookeepers arrive assuming that Dubois has returned the missing animals. At a welcome home ceremony at the zoo, Dubois packs a lethal injection for Alex, but Vitaly and the others come to their rescue. In the end, Alex and Vitaly join together, keeping the circus alive.
