Actors: Drew Barrymore, Hugh Grant

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Music & Lyrics

Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) was a member of the band "Pop!" in the 1980s. Struggling in his music career after the band broke apart, he is given the opportunity to relaunch his career when successful teen recording star and longtime Pop! fan, Cora Corman (Haley Bennett), asks Fletcher to compose a new song called "Way Back Into Love" for her latest album. The music is coming easily to Alex; the music, however, is not. When Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore) arrives to water Alex's plants, she overhears the musician's struggle to find the words and spouts some lyrics like a pro. Alex later discovers that Sophie is a former English major and suggests the two collaborate on the song. Sophie is flattered but still believes she is not a lyricist, declining the offer. Alex is convinced that Sophie is the one destined to help him and continues his methods to convince her of her talents. Sophie explains that when she was a college student, a relationship with her professor, Sloan Cates (Campbell Scott) destroyed her passion for writing, once Sloan smeared her in his best selling fiction work. As a last ditched effort, Alex takes Sophie to a piano store where he plays a melody with the lyrics she uttered while watering the plants. At last, Sophie is sold on the project and over the next few days, Sophie and Alex grow closer as they work closely with one another to meet Cora's deadline. Cora loves the song and plans to record it. When Cora decides to change the song, Alex defends the decision, focusing on music business, which alienates Sophie, who is determined to defend the beauty of the writing, not caring about the industry politics. Alex and Sophie part ways but quickly realize how much they are made for each other, personally and professionally.

Best part of story, including ending: This movie is a fun way to spend a couple of hours. It has music, a love for the arts, and family elements that appeal to the masses. Personally, the movie hit close to home as I am a music buff and a writer, so I know firsthand the challenges faced in the movie and can attest to the fact they were handled well and honestly.

Best scene in story: My favorite scene was at the Cora Corman concert at Madison Square Garden when Alex shocked everyone with a special song he did entirely compose himself. The song was the perfect apology and where Sophie learns in the movie that she IS capable, despite what others may think, Alex is also capable of doing great things too. The movie very subtly reminds us that we are all capable of whatever we put our minds to doing.

Opinion about the main character: Alex could be a bit of a jerk at times, but I think this was largely due to seeing an opportunity and not wanting anything to stand in his way. His character redeemed himself for me by movie's end. Sophie's progression throughout the movie, from a naive girl filled with fear to a strong willed writer with restored passion was refreshing.
