When his colony is chased out of their home by the homeowner, Remy gets separated from the main group. Lost in Paris, he manages to make his way to the restaurant previously owned by the late Gusteau. He quickly discovers that the current owner, Skinner, is trading on Gusteau's name in order to sell frozen dinners.

Remy sneaks into the restaurant, and secretly helps a young employee called Alfredo Linguini by fixing a soup he had ruined. Linguini's soup wins the approval of chef Colette Tatou, who recommends Linguini be promoted to cook. When Linguini in turn saves Remy's life, the two end up partnering so that Remy can cook and Linguini can remain employed.

Remy discovers that Linguini as actually Gusteau's secret son, and should have inherited the restaurant but Skinner has been hiding the information. He tells Linguini who is then able to take over the restaurant, running it with Colette. Remy feels left out as the two bond but is thrilled when he is reunited with his family of rats and finds their new lair.

Although happy to find them, Remy tells his family he would rather remain in the restaurant, and returns there. However Linguini has become arrogant and decides to cook without Remy's help, leading to a falling out between the two friends.

And the timing couldn't be worse, because the most severe and respected food critic in all of France is about to revisit is one-star review of the restaurant. At the same time, Skinner has discovered Remy's secret talent and is out to capture and exploit him.

Best part of story, including ending: The friendship between Remy and Linguini is very sweet.

Best scene in story: The food critic eating his meal was very touching.

Opinion about the main character: Remy is a fairly standard animated protagonist, but sweet all the same.
