Actors: Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Hank Azaria

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Smurfs

The Smurfs are preparing for the Blue Moon Festival when Papa Smurf sees a vision of Clumsy Smurf reaching for a wand and then Gargamel laughing at the Smurfs locked up in cages. Concerned, Papa forbids Clumsy from working outdoors; however, Clumsy disobeys and mistakenly leads Gargamel (Hank Azaria) and Azrael into Smurf Village. The Smurfs run for their lives to escape Gargamel's wrath and inadvertently fall into a vortex that leads the Smurfs through the sewers of 2011 New York. Azrael and Gargamel are still in pursuit of our blue friends.

Through trying to get a feel for this big new world they're visiting, the Smurfs make their way to the home that Patrick Winslow (Neil Patrick Harris) shares with his pregnant wife, Grace (Jayma Mays), and the family Bassett Hound. The couple agrees to let their new blue friends stay in their apartment. The next day, the Smurfs - needing a telescope - follow Patrick to work, misunderstanding what he does for a living.

Gargamel also arrives at Winslow's workplace and strikes up a conversation with Patrick's boss, Odile. Determined to find Patrick and reclaim what is his (the Smurfs), Gargamel follows him to a department store. He is later detained for attempted theft, thus allowing Patrick to escape without a confrontation.

Papa Smurf begins searching for ways to turn the moon blue in order to usher the crew back to Smurf Village. Patrick suggests a bookstore near his work and the Smurfs go off on their own to find the book of spells they need. Gargamel has managed to sneak into the bookstore and captures Papa Smurf, as the wise old Smurf ushers the others to safety. Papa Smurf had begged his Smurf friends not to save him, but Clumsy - along with Patrick - are determined to do the right thing. A battle ensues between the Smurfs and Gargamel and Smurfette manages to save Papa in the midst of the other Smurfs' distraction of Gargamel. As Gargamel again finds Papa, with the plan to kill him, Patrick steps in, saves Papa and ends the drama with Gargamel, once and for all.
Best part of story, including ending: Twenty-plus years removed from my childhood, it was nice to see The Smurfs back in the spotlight again. The interactions between the human characters and the digital Smurfs were endearing and believable.

Best scene in story: My favorite scene was when the Smurfs first met Grace and Patrick because the acting of Jayma Mays and Neil Patrick Harris. They sold the element of shock and surprise very well.

Opinion about the main character: I enjoyed the progression of Patrick from someone that saw the Smurfs as a burden and just one more thing to take away from his busy, more important life to acceptance that he would soon be a father, had a family and that there was more to life than just working. By the movie's end, he grew to love the Smurfs and was - in my view - more prepared for fatherhood than if Gargamel had never chased the Smurfs through that tunnel and into New York.
