Annie Laird (Demi Moore) is selected for jury duty in a trial against Louie Buffano, a mafia boss, who is accused of ordering the hit on another mob guy. She is an artist who lives with her son Oliver (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) in New York. Mark Cordell (Alec Baldwin), who works for Boffano as hit man, tries to ingratiate himself with her. He threatens to kill she and Oliver if she is not able to persuade the jury to get Buffano off.

Annie manages to convince the other jurors and Boffano gets acquitted. After the trial, Boffano suggests they should get rid of Annie, not to leave loose ends. Mark disagrees and convinces him otherwise. Meanwhile, Annie hides her son Oliver in a village in Guatemala, to ensure his safety. The DA, who found out Annie was being threatened, wants Annie to act as a witness for the state, so they can prosecute Mark, who is planning to move in on Boffano's action.
Annie wears a wire in a meeting set up with Mark. Annie ostensibly removes the wire, gives it to Eddie (James Gandolfini), who also works for Boffano, pretending she and Mark are a couple now. Annie manages to let Mark incriminate himself, secretly taping their conversation about his ambitions to take over Boffano's business. She tips him off with this information, and he tries to kill Mark. Instead Mark kills Boffano and his men. Mark, infuriated by the betrayal, calls Annie, and threatens to kill Oliver in Guatemala. In the final shoot out down there Annie manages to kill Mark.
