This is an award-winning film, based on the famous playwright, Lillian Hellman's book, although the true nature of the events has been contested. Directed by Fred Zinnemann, it co-starred Jane Fonda as Lillian and tells the story of her friendship with Julia, played by Vanessa Redgrave. This lifelong relationship, beginning in childhood in America, portrays Julia as having a rich family, who grows up to be idealistic, later becoming a physician.

SPOILERS During the 1930s, Lillian is trying to be successful as a playwright and is having a romance with fellow real-life writer, Dashiell Hammett. Meanwhile, Julia has been working to oppose the Nazi regime, with consequences for both her health and wealth. Julia and a friend recruit Lillian to smuggle a lot of money into Germany to help the fight against Nazism. Lillian agrees, taking a big risk as she is Jewish. In a conversation with Julia, Lillian finds out that Julia has a child and she's called Lily. When Lillian goes back to the U.S., she finds out that Julia has been murdered and is unable to find out the circumstances. She tries but fails to find Lily, and Julia's family refuses to help Lillian and don't seem to care about Julia.
