A Discovery Of Witches Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of A Discovery Of Witches

Diana Bishop is a historian who has strong witch ties, because of her parents. She ignores this trait and prefers to live a normal life. Doing research in Oxford University, she unknowingly pulls up a magical and powerful manuscript, Ashmole 782, and returns it back into the "unknown." Her awakening of the book suddenly causes all manner of supernatural beings such as vampires, witches, and daemons, to descend on Oxford, since they are all after the same book, which turns out holds the secrets to the origins of every specie. One such being is Matthew, a French geneticist vampire, who falls in love with Diana, and wants to protect her. When Oxford becomes a dangerous place, Matthew takes her to his mother's chateau, where they try to piece more puzzles together, and eventually develop a romance. Diana is pursued by vicious vampires, but survives. She then goes home to the States to be with her Aunts, who give her refuge. She also comes to terms with her witch lineage, learning that she possesses super-witch powers that are unheard of. Meanwhile, since their witch and vampire pairing is considered forbidden in the supernatural world, the couple must decide if they should call it off or risk it all.

Best part of story, including ending: It's like Twilight, only the couple deals things in a more adult and practical way.

Best scene in story: When Diana learns about the different classes of supernatural creatures, and that daemons are the super creative beings, known to us as the artists and rockstars of the world.

Opinion about the main character: Diana is level-headed so she finds the whole situation ludicrous, but she has no choice but to live the life that was somehow destined for her.
