Patty Burgland is unhappy in her marriage to Walter. Recounting their experiences getting together and her previous life as a star athlete at the University of Minnesota, she tries to find fulfillment as a homemaker and as a mother of two children, Joey and Jessica. However, as her children grow older and need her less and less, she finds her life to be boring. She has always had a crush on her husband's best friend and college roommate Robert Katz, and, on a fateful night in her family's lake house, she succumbs to her desire for him, and he succumbs to her advances, leaving the family in ruins.

Best part of story, including ending: The characters are brilliantly detailed.

Best scene in story: The scene where Patty and Robert finally do what we knew they were going to do all along, because it really makes the plot start moving.

Opinion about the main character: Patty is selfish but honest.
